A folio of design work by James Meadowcroft
↤ Back Home

I’m a ‘multidisciplinary’ designer. My practice is driven by research. It takes a strategic approach to outcomes.

Design is iterative. Design is collaborative. Design is hard to define.

I’m a communication designer, web developer, educator, writer, researcher and strategist.

Design is inherently multidisciplinary. Design is the mixture of specialities. Design is fun to be a part of.

This is my folio.

Music in Exile is a not-for-profit record label and registered charity supporting musicians with lived experience of migration and displacement who are living and working in the Australian music industry.

The website gives Music in Exile a flexible platform built to grow with its artists and community, sharing music, live events and merchandise in one place.

Each artist has a dedicated page that doubles as their own site. A custom CMS lets the team spin up new artist pages, and connects to event APIs to pull live event information automatically — keeping the site current with no manual upkeep.

The visual approach reflects the organisation's energetic, idiosyncratic identity. The palette was drawn directly from existing record covers, posters and artwork — treating the site as a continuation of work already made, not a departure from it. Motion runs throughout in hover states, page transitions and embedded video, giving the interface the same momentum as the music.

The Music in Exile visual identity is by Rochelle Oh, Liz Luby and Rick Milovanovic.
